some of my earliest memories are of playing mario 64 on the ds (though i did also play a bit of the original mario 64 as well). there is something i cannot and perhaps dare not place about the environments in m64, some memory drifting like a pleasant smell taking you back to your childhood, only to be whisked away by the next breeze. except the smell is pleasant at first until you realize it's tinted with the smell of smoke and fumes and burning dreams. alas.

there is a liminal nature to m64 for me that is so unsettling in a way i cannot place even to this day, that i have not dared to replay it. it remains one of the few games i played religously in my youth that i have not replayed, and perhaps the only one by choice. despite how readily i could play it again, i cannot bring myself to do so.
